Optimising Sleep

We have already covered the benefits of sleep and how the modern world does not always let us get the sleep we need. So, whatever time we do have, we need to make the most of what we can.

Whatever happens you do not want to be this person…

These are some possible alterations you can make to help improve your sleep:

  • CPAP
  • Black out blinds or sleeping mask
  • Soothing music
  • Getting to bed at the same time
  • Keeping the temperature to a moderate level
  • Reducing use of cell phones before bed
  • Reading – novels but try to reduce reading the news as to keep the mind less alert

First up on the list is CPAP which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. But you already knew that didn’t you. It works by blowing a degree of air pressure into lungs during your sleep cycle to keep the airways open and thus reduces snoring. Snoring can cause micro arousals which means you cannot get your REM (Random Eye Movement) sleep, we need this, it’s important!

Obviously not everyone can afford a CPAP or likes the concept of wearing one or looking like someone out of Batman. So there are other alternatives to help you get a good nights rest. Such items as black out blinds are useful to control the amount of light into the room. By reducing the level of light you are less likely to be awoken – this means happy sleep time!

Soothing music, reading and reducing using your cell phone at bed time can also help to relax your body and mind to get that sleep you need. Other options such as keeping the temperature at a constant level, as in not too hot or cold, can again reduce the chance of being awoken and keep your body in the most ideal state to be able to sleep well.

If you can, try to get to bed at the same time every night (or a similar time) to help to maintain sleep patterns. This will help with your internal ‘body clock’ and then get the best rest you can possible.
